Alcatraz Island
Alcatraz Island is situated in San Francisco Bay, 1.25 miles (2.01 km) seaward from San Francisco, California, United States. The little island was created with offices for a beacon, a military fortress, a military jail (1868), and a government jail from 1934 until 1963. Starting in November 1969, the island was involved for over 19 months by a gathering of Native Americans from San Francisco who were a piece of a flood of Native activism the country over with open challenges through the 1970s. In 1972, Alcatraz turned out to be a piece of a national entertainment zone and got assignment as a National Historic Landmark in 1986. Today, the island's offices are overseen by the National Park Service as a component of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area; it is interested in visits.
